Iconic Yorkshire theatre and gallery Barnsley Civic, which first opened its doors in 1877, has reopened its iconic entrance with custom-made signage which engages visitors and celebrates its heritage, thanks to Signs Now.
The client
Barnsley Civic is a contemporary arts centre with a 336-seat theatre and gallery, exhibition and workshop spaces. A hub for culture and creativity, its programme of work includes music, dance, comedy, theatre, exhibitions and work made especially for families and children.
The project
As part of a £3.5m project to regenerate the building, Barnsley Civic approached Signs Now for help with custom-made interior and exterior signage for the reopening of its iconic Eldon Street entrance.
The event marked a significant milestone in the ongoing story of a building steeped in heritage, culture and community. Originally built in 1877, the landmark building has been at the core of Barnsley’s cultural and social development for over a century.
Barnsley Civic asked Signs Now to design and install clean, modern signage for the building’s exterior. Inside, they wanted vibrant, creative wall graphics to brighten up the hallways and clear navigational signage to help visitors find their way around the building.
Solution and installation
Our design team collaborated with colleagues at Barnsley Civic to create a comprehensive signage plan, beginning with in-depth consultations to understand their requirements.
Signs Now visited the building to conduct a site survey and ensure the correct measurements were taken before the manufacture of any signage.
Our designers crafted preliminary concepts, balancing functionality and visual appeal. We produced multiple samples for Barnsley Civic’s approval, ensuring the final products met their expectations.
We then used an experienced installation crew to fit the external signage to the entrance and the artwork and directional signage to the walls inside. Special attention was paid to the mounting and placement of the signs to ensure they were securely fixed and capable of withstanding daily wear and tear.
The Project Manager, Glen Fitzpatrick, who has been with Signs Now for almost 20 years, commented “We are very happy with our work on this high-profile project. With the Civic being one of Barnsley’s most magnificent buildings, we were careful to listen to the client and to appreciate the historic background to this wonderful piece of history."
